Notes per type


    

  • Wi-Fi: iPhone joins the network directly from the Camera app. The security field must match the router; choose nopass for open networks. Hidden networks need H:true.
    • 

  • vCard: keep it to the fields you need; every field adds modules. Version 3.0 is the safest choice for phones.
    • 

  • SMS: SMSTO:number:message is the widely supported form. The message is prefilled; the user still has to tap send.
    • 

  • Email: a mailto: link with subject and body encoded. Line breaks in the body become %0A.
    • 

  • Phone: international format with a plus sign, no spaces.
    • 

  • Location: geo:lat,lon opens the maps app. Coordinates in decimal degrees.
    • 

  • Calendar: a bare VEVENT works on iOS and most Android scanners. Times are written in local time; add a Z for UTC if the audience spans time zones.
    •

Frequently asked questions
▸Why show the raw payload?
So you can see there is no magic. A QR code is text; the phone decides what to do based on how the text starts. Knowing the format lets you fix a code that behaves oddly.
▸vCard or MeCard?
vCard is understood everywhere and holds more fields. MeCard is smaller. Use vCard unless the code must be tiny.
▸Do special characters in a Wi-Fi password break the code?
Semicolons, commas, colons, backslashes and quotes must be escaped with a backslash. This tool does it for you.
