Who each one is for
Gamma Play’s iOS app is listed as “QR Code Reader + QR Scanner”. It is a scanner first: QR codes, barcodes, ISBNs, contacts, calendar entries, email, location and Wi-Fi network codes, with a flashlight and pinch-to-zoom. A generator is included for contact details, websites and social profiles. The free version shows ads; a single $5.99 purchase removes them. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision, needs iOS 15, and was last updated in December 2025.
If you scan far more than you create, and want ads gone for the price of a coffee, this is a reasonable choice. QR Studio is for the person who creates.
Where QR Studio is better
- Design. Colours, dot and eye shapes, logos and an AI design partner. Gamma Play’s listing describes “custom QR codes” with no design options named.
- Export. SVG and print-ready PDF. Gamma Play’s listing names no export format.
- Dynamic codes and analytics. Edit the destination after printing and count scans. Not offered.
- Cloud sync. Codes follow your Apple ID. Not offered.
- No ads at any tier. QR Studio’s free tier has no ads. Gamma Play’s privacy label lists usage data for third-party advertising, and the ads stay until you pay.
Where QR & Barcode Scanner is better
- Price of silence. $5.99 once and the ads are gone.
- Shopping. Barcode scanning with price comparison.
- Wi-Fi. Scan a network code and join directly.
- Platforms. Mac and Apple Vision builds.
- Older devices. iOS 15 minimum.

Switching
Nothing dynamic, nothing to break. Decode any code you made and rebuild it in QR Studio. Keep Gamma Play for barcode price checks if you use them; QR Studio’s scanner reads barcodes but does not compare prices.
