Every iPhone since 2017 scans QR codes without an app. Here are the four ways, when to use each, and the one thing the built-in scanner cannot do.
Method 1: the Camera app
- Open Camera and stay in Photo mode.
- Point at the code from 15 to 40 cm away so it fills about a third of the frame.
- Hold still. A yellow banner appears at the top with the destination.
- Tap the banner. A long-press shows the full address first.

Method 2: the Code Scanner in Control Centre
Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Centre and tap the Code Scanner icon (a QR code in a square). If it is missing, add it in Settings, Control Centre. It has a torch button and opens the result directly in an in-app browser, which is handy for a quick look without leaving Safari behind.
Method 3: the Camera Control button (iPhone 16 and later)
In Settings, Camera, Camera Control, you can set the button to open the Code Scanner. One press, point, done.
Method 4: from a photo or screenshot
The Camera cannot scan a code that is displayed on the same phone. Two options:
- Live Text. Open the screenshot in Photos. If the code holds a web link, a small indicator may appear on it; tap to open. It only works for links and not on every model.
- A decoder. Upload the screenshot to the free decoder, or use a scanner app that reads from the photo library. This works for Wi-Fi, contacts and everything else. Details in scanning from a screenshot.

In practice
Read the banner before you tap it. Your iPhone is showing you the destination so you can decide. A fine notice, a parcel you did not order or a parking meter sticker deserve a second look; the security explainer says why.
