A QR code is read by a camera. An NFC tag, short for near-field communication, is read by a radio in the phone when it comes within a few centimetres. Both can carry the same link. The question is not which is better but which fits the place, the reader and the budget. Often the answer is both.
What each one is good at
QR wins on cost and distance. It is ink, so it costs nothing per copy, and it can be read from across a room if printed large enough. It also works on screens, in emails and in documents, where NFC cannot exist. Its weakness is that the reader has to open the camera, find the code and hold still.
NFC wins on the gesture. A tap is quicker than a photo, works in the dark and does not need the reader to see anything. Its weakness is that every unit needs a physical chip, the phone has to be within a few centimetres, and the reader cannot tell a tag is there unless something tells them.

When to pair them
Pair QR with NFC when three things are true. The reader will be within arm’s reach. The unit count is small enough that a chip per unit is affordable. And the audience includes people who prefer a tap, or who will be in poor light. Worked example: a hotel with 120 room doors. Each door gets a hybrid label linking to that room’s guide. 120 chips is affordable, guests are at the door with a phone in hand, and corridors are often dim. The QR code stays for the guest whose phone has NFC switched off.
Do not pair them for a 10,000-leaflet mailing or a billboard. Leaflets make a chip per unit expensive, and nobody taps a billboard.

Cost
A QR code is free to reproduce. An NFC tag is a small antenna and chip, usually on a sticker or embedded in a card, bought per unit. Prices fall with volume and rise with durability, so a plain paper-face sticker for indoor use costs less than an on-metal or outdoor tag. The practical rule is simple: if you would balk at paying for a physical item for every unit, use QR alone. If the units are counted in dozens or a few hundred and each one will be tapped many times, NFC pays for itself in convenience.

Tamper resistance
Both can be attacked, in different ways. A QR code can be covered with a sticker carrying a different code. That is the parking meter scam, and the defence is a frame or print that makes a stuck-on square obvious, plus regular checks. An NFC tag can be rewritten in place if it was left writable, so the sign looks untouched but the link has changed. The defence is to lock the tag when you write it, which most writing apps offer. A rogue tag can also be stuck over yours, so the same visual checks apply.

Common mistake
Trusting the tag’s link because it is invisible. An NFC tag is not more secure than a printed code just because you cannot see it. Lock it, and treat any unexpected redirect on tap as seriously as a sticker over a QR code.
How iPhones and Android phones read tags
Recent iPhones read NFC tags in the background. When the screen is on and the passcode has been entered, bringing the top of the phone near a tag that holds a URL shows a notification, and tapping it opens the link. Apple documents this as background tag reading, available on iPhone XS and later; older models with NFC need the Control Centre NFC Tag Reader or an app. Android phones read tags when the screen is on and not locked, and open the URL directly or offer a chooser. In both cases the phone must be close, usually within 2 to 4 cm, and the antenna is near the top of the phone, so the tag should be placed where the top of a phone lands naturally.

Hybrid tags in practice
A hybrid tag is a printed label with the QR code on the face and the NFC chip underneath. Both carry the same link, so whichever the reader chooses, they land in the same place. Print the code to the same rules as any other, at least one tenth of the reading distance, with a quiet zone, and put the NFC chip away from the code’s corners so the label’s Tap here mark does not crowd the quiet zone. Identical links in both, so the report cannot say whether the chips were worth buying.
